FieldKit and Recycling

We want FieldKit to make the world better, not worse. Here are some of the things that we do to minimize our impact on the environment.

Hardware

FieldKit hardware and solar panels can be disposed of in any e-waste disposal and recycling site. Your locality will likely have regulations, suggestions, and programs available to you.

FieldKit batteries require separate disposal; most localities have battery disposal options available.

Packaging

FieldKit equipment ships in a corrugated cardboard box using at least 30% recycled material and has been printed with environmentally friendly ink. We encourage you to reuse your FieldKit packaging. Some suggestions:

  • Use it for storing and organizing all the things in your junk drawer
  • Turn it into an exciting playground for a hamster or other rodent pal
  • Flatten it and use it for sheet mulching

If you find a creative use for your FieldKit box, please share it on social media and tag us with @fieldkitorg! We would love to see what you come up with.

If you’re not able to reuse the box, however, it can also easily be recycled with other cardboard. Just be sure to remove the foam sheet insert before you place the box in a recycling bin.

Sustainability in Production

We aim to minimize the plastic waste created through the production of our FieldKit Cases by reusing 20% reground plastic gates from the injection mold process of one production run in the next.

Once used, these gates are reground into tiny, uniform plastic pellets that the injection mold equipment is designed to melt and push into the mold of subsequent FieldKit cases. While the reground material from the gates obviously won’t be used in the first batch of cases, it will be available from batch two onward. Thus, our FieldKit cases will become visually less perfect each batch but environmentally more friendly, while still maintaining structural integrity.
