Background

Conservify (Conservify.org) is an open conservation technology firm that empowers conservationists and communities to tackle environmental challenges by making effective conservation tools more accessible. Through the development of new technology built to disrupt the current market, Conservify is breaking new ground in the democratization of conservation technology and data.

As part of their mission to build an “open conservation” community, Conservify is currently developing an innovative new product called FieldKit. The product is an open-source software and hardware sensor platform that optimizes data collection and sharing from the field. The product will be low cost and easy to use, and will bridge the gap between hard science and storytelling by facilitating data storytelling through engaging visualizations and built-in connections to social media. The first of its kind in the conservation space, it has the potential to revolutionize conservation technology.

Job Description

Conservify is seeking a dependable hands-on Operations and Fulfillment Lead with strong interpersonal and organizational skills to help streamline FieldKit’s day-to-day operations and execute order fulfillment. The ideal candidate has a passion for conservation technology. They are at once a proactive problem-solver, prioritizing and rolling up their sleeves to keep things on track independently, and also a compassionate leader who empowers those they supervise.

As the company “glue”, they’re confident meeting tight deadlines and wearing many hats – pivoting from meticulous routine tasks to high level scoping activities. They support both local and remote teams to do their best work by maintaining reliable systems and jumping in to help where needed – be that coordinating team travel, shipping out the latest batch of FieldKit orders, or researching a new parts supplier.

Responsibilities

Executes cross-functional company-wide operations, and supports the product and project teams.

  • Administration
    Manages the company email and calendar, maintains written company systems and protocols. Supports the product and project teams, including coordination of team travel, expenses, and meetings.
  • HR assistance
    Provides HR administrative assistance. Manages new team-member onboarding. Champions company culture, organizes social occasions, stocks fridge.
  • Finance assistance
    Liaises with FieldKit’s fiscal sponsor and financial consultants to support regular financial reporting and compliance. Invoices project partners and clients (accounts receivable). Coordinates monthly company expenses.

Owns the order lifecycle, including stocktaking, order fulfillment, logistics and customer service support.

  • Lab organization and front-of-house coordination
    Maintains an organized and safe office/lab/storage space at all times and accompanying written lab protocols, including OSHA standards and safety protocols. Greets lab visitors, liaises with building management, couriers and contractors.
  • Inventory management
    Performs regular inventory stocktakes (electrical components, reels etc) and forecasts ordering needs. Orders and receives supplies into the lab ahead of time, all-the-while maintaining an up-to-date digital stock count (in the inventory/manufacturing software and ecommerce platform).
  • Order preparation
    Assembles and tests components and FieldKit products, including custom solar cables, board connectors and enclosures. Calibrates module boards and instrumentation.
  • Order fulfillment, customer service support, and shipping logistics
    Picks, packs and ships orders in the lab, supervises any fulfillment support staff, and digitally tracks orders. Supports the customer service team on sales quotes and issues. Manages product returns. Owns shipping logistics for domestic and international shipments (scaling into more countries), liaises with legal and tax consultants to build shipping protocols.
Scope
  • Full Time lab-based, W2 Employee role
  • $65,000 per annum (additional dependent on experience)
  • Reports to Shah Selbe, founder of Conservify and Managing Director of FieldKit
  • Position to start immediately
Requirements
  • Excellent time management and prioritization (“big picture”) skills with an eye for detail
  • Comfortable trying new things, failing, learning, and adapting
  • Comfortable with independent working and working in a team
  • Compassionate leader with a direct and empathetic communication style
  • Digitally savvy and comfortable in Google suite, WordPress, WooCommerce, Slack, Katana MRP, ShipStation or similar
  • Must be able to work out of the Conservify lab in Downtown Los Angeles
Preferred
  • Experience with hardware development and fabrication
  • Experience with shipping logistics
  • Experience with the ordering and stocking of electronic components

Quality Assurance Lead (Full Time)

Job Description

FieldKit is seeking a hands-on Quality Assurance Lead to help us validate the quality and usability of the FieldKit platform, which includes the set-up and management of FieldKit stations (environmental sensing hardware) using the mobile app, and sensor data management via the web portal. As an experienced quality assurance specialist, you will predominantly perform quality assurance testing across the suite of hardware and software components to ensure that the product meets quality standards and requirements, find and report bugs, and work within the customer support ticketing system to help reproduce and solve user queries. On occasion, you might assist with assembly and calibration of FieldKit units, fulfillment or expedition preparation and logistics.

The ideal candidate is curious, self-sufficient, and detail-oriented, and has a flair for software and hardware testing. They possess strong analytical, documentation and communication skills, which come together in well-written support tickets that help efficiently identify and resolve issues. They are a proactive problem-solver and team-player with the ability to empathize with the end user.

Responsibilities

Here are some of the core responsibilities for the job—these are what you would spend most of your time doing:

  • Best-practice quality assurance including web, app, firmware, and hardware testing
  • Setting up, maintaining, and testing your own FieldKit stations
  • Defining acceptance criteria alongside product managers, writing test plans alongside developers, running short and long term tests, identifying and reproducing issues, generating issue reports and support tickets, assisting developers with issue analysis, and verifying patches and bug fixes
  • Working as a bridge between community management and development teams to investigate user issues and resolve problems, including sometimes working directly with users

Sometimes you might also:

  • Support product development and production efforts, usability testing sessions, and volunteer testers
  • Assist with product documentation (photography and film), content entry, inventory monitoring, expedition preparation and logistics,
  • Build hardware enclosures, assemble and calibrate units
Scope

  • Open to remote and hybrid-remote working candidates based in the United States (FieldKit Lab is based in Los Angeles, CA)
  • $65,000 – $70,000 per annum (additional dependent on experience)
  • Reports to Jacob Lewallen, Principal Engineer of FieldKit
  • Position to start immediately
Requirements
  • Proven track record of success in a quality assurance role
  • Strong documentation and communication skills
  • An understanding of web-delivered applications
  • Experience with the processes of software and hardware development, and fabrication
  • Knowledgeable about popular web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Edge, Safari, etc.) and major operating systems (Windows, Mac OS, Linux).
  • Effective oral and written communication skills in English
  • Ability to work independently, and an openness to variety and trying new things
  • Must have valid U.S. work authorization without the need for sponsorship by the company
Preferred
  • Experience with developing automated test scripts
  • Experience with GitLab/GitHub, Jira, Zendesk and similar programs
  • A technical degree is preferred, but not required (in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Math, or a related technical degree with a Computer Science minor)
