Senior Software Engineer

As part of their mission to build an “open conservation” community, Conservify launched an innovative new product called FieldKit (fieldkit.org). The product is an open-source software and hardware sensor platform that optimizes data collection and sharing from the field. The product will be low cost and easy to use, and will bridge the gap between hard science and storytelling by facilitating data storytelling through engaging visualizations and built-in connections to social media. Job Description

Conservify is seeking a hands-on Senior Software Engineer with front end and back end experience developing rich web and mobile applications, and a strong desire to build a best-in-class product that stands out in both form and function. They must have a passion for conservation technology, to learn and share knowledge with other team members, and to engage a passionate open source community. Technical Stack

Responsibilities
  • Leads design and development of projects, either independently or in a team
  • Assists with recruitment, interviewing, and hiring new team members
  • Provides mentorship to junior team members and participate in design decisions
Requirements
  • 2+ years as a professional software developer
  • Strong familiarity with front and back end web development
  • Strong software development fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, etc.)
  • Experience writing automated tests for front and back end features
  • Attention to writing scalable and maintainable code and a passion for quality
  • Intimate knowledge of JS and Golang ecosystem (tooling, libraries, etc.)
  • Passion for learning and sharing new knowledge with team members
    Strong organization and communication skills

Graphic Designer (Mid-Senior, Freelance)

Job Description

Conservify is seeking a hands-on Freelance Graphic Designer with a deep understanding of web and mobile application design best practices, and a strong desire to build a best-in-class product that stands out in both form and function. The candidate must be comfortable wearing multiple hats, working across the board from high level art direction responsibilities through to full asset production. They should have a solid understanding of print design, as there may be occasions when print assets are required. A familiarity with both code and also fabrication is preferable, due to the nature of the product spanning both software and hardware capabilities.

The ideal candidate will be a team player and a proactive problem-solver with excellent communication & organizational skills. They are confident meeting the deadlines of a fast-paced schedule and working with local and remote creative and technical teams, knowing when to drive plans and when to pivot for the best results.

They must have a passion for conservation technology, to learn and share knowledge with other team members, and to engage a passionate open source community. Responsibilities
  • Designs for print, web, and mobile applications. Art directs, develops and enforces the brand guidelines. Leads the web and mobile app UI and visual design, creating style frames, UI designs, clickable comp prototypes and wireframes, full template designs, as necessary. Creates graphic assets
  • Owns artwork/visual style quality assurance. Tests final visual design after components have been built to ensure that it meets quality criteria
  • Attends regular workshops and project meetings. Liaises with the creative, technical and fabrication teams. Mentors and manages junior freelance designers and animators, as necessary
Requirements
  • 3+ years proven experience leading fast-paced experience and visual design projects for web and mobile applications, as well as print
  • Experience with relevant software – Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Zeplin, Invision, Google Docs, Keynote
  • Strong portfolio with asset production and illustration samples
Preferred
  • Experience with coding
  • Experience with fabrication processes

Mechanical Engineer
(Freelance or Contract)

Job Description

Conservify is seeking a hands-on Freelance or Contract Mechanical Engineer with 4-6 years of industry experience developing electronics products with specific focus on marine environments.

Their role will be to guide the evolution of FieldKit Marine, as we adapt our terrestrial offering for surface and deep water oceanographic exploration. The scope of work includes developing solutions for an end cap, probe holder, connector/interfaces, and exterior enclosure mount for an off-the-shelf waterproof enclosure, as well as an interior chassis to secure the circuit boards.

They are a proactive problem-solver, able to juggle and prioritize competing needs, and confident in meeting tight deadlines with local and remote teams.

Position to start immediately. We are a California based organization mostly working remotely. All tools and materials needed for the job will be sent to your location if not local.

Responsibilities
  • Leads the mechanical design and prototyping process for FieldKit Marine
    • Researches competitor offerings as well as relevant off-the-shelf and custom-off-the-shelf options. Designs products from concept to production, including concept sketches, modeling, specifying/sourcing components, detail manufacturing drawings, and bill of materials
    • Creates 3D CAD designs and engineering drawings in preferred CAD software (Fusion 360 or equivalent). Develops, prototypes and assists in development and manufacturing of new products that are optimized for manufacturing, assembly, and test
    • Manages and tracks multiple priorities within schedule requirements to meet deliveries and project deployments in the field. Conducts related mechanical design reviews and drives file release process
  • Leads quality assurance and certification recommendations
    • Leads mechanical quality assurance process. Performs product testing and failure analysis, including design of experiments as necessary
    • Supports relevant mechanical analyses and certifications in support of design and manufacturing feasibility and bringing a product to market
    • Willingness to travel for field deployments
  • Leads manufacturer communications
    • Develops designs and processes with external vendors, acting as product development technical liaison among vendors. Communicates multi-functionally on design directions and requirements
Relevant Experience
  • Preferred 4-6 years of experience in product development in industry, preferably in consumer electronics for marine environments
  • B.S., M.Eng., or M.S. in mechanical engineering (from an accredited program, completed prior to start date) or demonstrated equivalent experience in mechanical design and engineering
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and people skills; ability to interact with management, team members and external vendors
  • Experience creating prototypes at varying levels of fidelity: from rough mockups to fully functional models
    Working knowledge of materials and processes typically used in consumer electronics fabrication.
  • Experience with or knowledge of injection molded plastic parts, components, enclosures, and the design considerations around them
  • Disciplined in crafting clear engineering documentation (including GD&T)
  • Experience leading others in a collaborative environment
  • Experience in fabrication and rapid prototyping methods and tools.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing methods (e.g., welding, soldering, adhesive bonding, machining, stamping, molding, etc.)
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturability, Assembly, and Test
  • Experienced 3D CAD software user. Proficient in geometric dimensioning and tolerance
  • Experience working with overseas manufacturers
  • Experience in quality assurance procedures
  • Applied knowledge in PCB design, integration, and radio optimization is beneficial
  • Experience in electronics and/or programming a plus
Requirements
  • Prior experience designing and building mechanical products for marine environments
  • Effective oral and written communication skills in English
  • Data-driven and detail focused
  • Must have valid U.S. work authorization without the need for sponsorship by the company
